Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) CEO Rhett Evans is safely back at GCSAA headquarters and is looking forward to jumping back into his role as CEO and serving GCSAA members after successfully summiting Mount Everest at 3:13 a.m.
on May 23.
To represent GCSAA’s 20,342 members and the essential role they play in golf’s success, he wore a GCSAA patch on his outerwear and unfurled a flag with GCSAA’s logo and his favorite motto “onward” while standing on the top
of the world at 29,035 feet. Many GCSAA members and others followed his 45-day journey as he chronicled it on social media.
“To all those who offered prayers, provided support, positive thoughts and encouragement, you were instrumental in keeping me moving forward. Thank you,” Evans said.
Evans overcame several setbacks during his journey, including several injuries that required him to be airlifted from the Everest Basecamp to seek medical attention in Katmandu, Nepal, before returning to back to Everest Basecamp to complete his successful
climb.
Evans has been climbing for more than 30 years, and some of his other notable achievements include Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Elbrus in Russia, Aconcagua in Argentina Denali in Alaska, Grand Teton in Wyoming, Mount Rainier in Washington and
numerous technical climbs in Utah and Colorado.
During the same week as Evans’ summit, three climbers lost their lives on the mountain with a total of eight losing their life during the 2024 climbing season
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the fallen climbers this season. May they rest in peace,” Evans said.
After a 22-hour flight back home, Evans was happy to reunite with his wife, Colleen, and to start gaining back some of the 26 pounds he lost during his adventure. He also took some time to rest and reflect on his expedition to Everest.
“I learned so much about life and who I am and what the human spirit is capable of,” Evans said. “Our minds are the most powerful tool that we can harness for all levels of success in life. Our thoughts shape who we are and who we will
become. The capability we each possess is far greater than most of us can even begin to imagine.”
